What if WebCT had a virtual meeting space similar to SecondLife?
Problem: current online courseware doesn't support multi-user, immersive virtual environments
Action: while a theoretical approach would be preferred, it'd resemble a functional approach of blending WebCT and SecondLife
Response: more immersive, entertaining collaborative environment created- learning would be better supported by the enhanced communication
Pros:
- human communication supported better- enhanced / higher level, more communication channels
- degree of human communication supported in the simulation (non-verbal cues, etc) - the more supported, the better
- end result could take online courseware to the next level
- supports scaffolding: supports learning by providing another layer / opportunity to learn (scaffolding suggests offering multiple modes of learning is good: supports different kinds of learners)
- could achieve video-podcasts, allows watching previously recorded teaching / learning interactions of a virtual classroom
Cons:
- hardware requirements: online courseware currently works on almost anything with an internet connection: my idea would require hardware similar to SecondLife: relatively fast processor and graphics card, probably broadband internet connection
- negative effects of using 3D simulations: some people don't like using them - not appealing to everyone (motivation: some have bad experience / genetics / attitude towards sims)
